Analysis:
Chapter 1
M. Hyde
-Ugly, but reason is not easily pinpointed
-Deformed, perhaps socially, rather than physically
-Enfield says "No, sir; I can make no hand of it; I can’t describe him. And it’s not want of memory; for I declare I can see him this moment."- This shows that his looks lend to him a sinister ambiguity (something something potential for evil that resides in all of us)
-Really fugly. However, we can't really tell if this is because of his appearance, or because of some deeper personality thing that rises to the surface. This is emphasized by Enfield first saying "displeasing", then "downright detestable" and finally " I never saw a man I so disliked"
-Generally evokes a spirit of distrust and contempt in his fellow man.
basically Hyde is a freak
Chapter 3
Dr. Jekyll.
-A handsome human being.
-Slightly roguish but also lovable. A raffish man.
-Cherishes his friends, especially Mr. Utterson
-Tactful, gives an air of good cheer and a carefree nature- shewn when Utterson brings up the "distasteful" topic of Jekyll's will
- However, this changes as soon as reference to Hyde is brought up. The sinister, double nature of Jekyll is briefly brought out, by a "blackness about his eyes".
-The sinister element is further emphasized by his turning pale at the mention of Hyde. (something something shame and fear of reprisal for bad deeds committed by a seemingly good man)
Similarities:
Both Jekyll and Hyde possess some trait that shows a sinister, evil disposition. For Jekyll it is restrained and shown through the "Blackness" in his eyes, and his "sly" mannerisms. For Hyde it is much more explicit, and shown through almost everything said about the man.
Differences:
Jekyll's description focuses more on the emotionally linked physical characteristics, such as a kind face. Jekyll's description also focuses on his manners and personality. This differs from Hyde's description, which focuses almost solely on his ugliness, and disconcerting nature (be it spiritual or physical).
The Poem
The purpose of this poem is to explain the contrast, and dichotomy between Jekyll and Hyde as presented to us in the 2 (only 2) paragraphs that I analyzed. The effect is to emphasize the dichotomy between the two.
H: I am Hyde
J: I am Jekyll
J: I am Doctor of Physick
H: I am a Violent Cad
H: Ugly and Brutish and Evil is Me.
J: Kindly and Elegant and Tactful I Be.
J: Loved by all, surrounded by friends
H: Reviled by all, surrounded by Dregs
H: Drunken and Angry and Loathsome I Be.
J: Refined and Even and Charming I Be.
J: I have but one shame, A second half to Me
H: I have but one shame, A second Half to Me.
H: A wizened, kindly miserable fiend
J: A haggard, evil, ugly brute
J: His name is Hyde
H: His name is Jekyll
Both: They pull me back. I loathe them.

Neat ideas presented in your poem- be sure you are using specific literary terminology in your comparison (this is necessary in Paper 1)
